Introduction

St Paul's Hostel was created by volunteers in 1977. We have a growing base of around 120 volunteers. There are still many more opportunities for people at St Pauls Hostel. Here is an outline of how you can help the hostel.

Fundraising

St Paul’s Hostel has a specific Fund Raising Group that meets approximately every 3 months. Its aim is to raise money for the Resident's Fund, (which may help to pay for train fares, or prizes for games in the evening or college books), and also is focusing on the new extension that is planned to increase bed spaces, office space and workshop areas. So far the SPFRG has created

  • an Annual Buffet, twice with an auction: using Henry Sandon and then Mike George from BBC Hereford and Worcester as the auctioneers,
  • an Annual Bazaar in the Guildhall in September,
  • has organised an Annual plant sale at the Dry House and
  • garden parties
  • The group has been active since 2003, and has raised £23,155!

Last year 2007 was the 30th Anniversary year, and more events to celebrate this milestonewere achieved. (See Current goings on: Past Events)

    Donating

    Money
All donated money is used for the direct benefit of clients, for example Christmas presents, toiletries, trips out, or future capital projects. No donated money goes towards the running of the hostel.

    Furniture
The Resettlement team run a furniture store, and are happy to be called about unwanted furniture. The store is very small and quickly fills up. As a result of this St Paul’s Hostel cannot always accept donated items. Please ring up beforehand to discuss available space.

    Clothes
St Paul’s Hostel also accepts donations of clothes, shoes, bedding and toiletries.

    Volunteering

There have been volunteers helping to serve and clear up the Evening Meals for over 30 years! This role is still essential to the running of the hostel, allowing at least two staff members to stay close to the front door and office over the occasionally tempestuous suppertime.

We are developing our befriending system. This is where a volunteer and client, usually resettled into their own home, meet on a regular basis. This would be in a public place, coffee shop probably, for a chat. There is training, and ongoing supervision for volunteers to try out this demanding and rewarding voluntary role.
