Gourmets in Good Company

On 15th November 2008 the St Paul’s Fundraising Team fed and entertained 120 people at St Peter’s Baptist Church, Worcester. This was one of the Mayor’s charity events for St Paul’s Hostel and the Worcester Breast Unit Campaign. The funds are to be divided between the two charities.

The canapés were delicious, served with punch and accompanied by Paul Rose on the guitar.  The home-cooked food was fantastic, with much of the meat being donated by Top Barn Farm.

Rocky Hudson, of the Good Soil Project (GSP), spoke about his work with Monty Don on The Farm, as seen on the BBC. He has moved on to start another project at Top Barn Farm, assisting drug users to stay off their drugs while working on the land. Several of the clients came along to speak about how important the GSP has been to them.

The evening was very successful, and hopefully raised lots of money!

Annual with Caberet
Eight In A Bar
17th November at the
Bradbury Centre, Sansome Walk

It was a popular event, and a great success with approximately 80 people in attendance. The event raised just over £1567, with a hand made quilt raising £100 at auction.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious home cooked food. The entertainment was an old fashioned mix of barber shop singing, jokes and magic. Notable was the Hawaiian sketch, see photos.

There were be the usual stalls selling Posh Bric a Brac, Books and Videos, Home made produce (including cakes) as well as a tombola, a raffle, Black Beard's Treasure, balloons, tea and cake, and other lovely things!! A star stall was that selling produce from the Good Soil project, the continuation of the Monty Don Farm Project. Black Tie Event Raises £17000.

Mortgage Brain Fund Raising Event.

We raised over £17000 on Wednesday 17th October at a black tie event in London. It was all thanks to Bob Jose who works for Mortgage Brain a financial company with offices in London and Bromsgrove. 500 London bankers attended, and the proceeds were divided between a national company Kids Out and us!
Resident Andres, who had worked with Monty Don on the Farm Project, was chosen as the St Paul's Hostel speaker. Instead of creating a DVD about the hostel, Andres talked about his life, and how the hostel has worked with him over the years.
The celebrety guest was Paul Merson, ex-Arsenal football player. He and Andres got on famously, as shown by the picture.

Pen-y-Fan Walk August 07

A member of staff and a resident, Nicole and Mark organised a trip to the Brecon Beacons, including a walk up the south side of Pen-y-Fan. Nic using her Outdoors Activities experience and Mark, his ex-army experience, made sure the trip was safe and enjoyable for all.

A full write up is in the November Newsletter. Paul Mann, one of the residents, helped with the write up, and had a few things to say, commenting on arrival at the hills ‘it’s a bit steep’, the walk was hard going and ‘…knowing that we had come that far, we weren’t going to give up now’.

The seven residents that took part also showed their appreciation, and thanked Nic, Debbie and Mark for making the trip happen.

The Allotment

The allotment is powering ahead! Thanks to money from the Fund Raising Group, we have bought a large shed, some compost, and canes. The pots came from Freecycle, and the slabs were all donated by several volunteers.

One of the latest purchases was a cider apple tree, bought in memory of Colin who died this February. Two other fruit trees are planted nearby and everything is underplanted with mixed bulbs. We are working with the next door allotment holder, in a two way flow of assistance! We have a core group of residents who pop down when ever they can.

The Big Sleep-Out Challenge
23rd June 1700 - 1000am

St Paul's Hostel Fund Raising Group was given permission to hold a mass sleep-out on the College Green, behind the Cathedral. YOU provided: a sleeping bag, a minimum of £15 from your sponsorship money, good humour and earplugs! WE provided: a snack supper, a snack breakfast, live jazz, a safe place to sleep, loos, wash basins and first aid. Whilst there wasn't a huge turnout, the atmosphere was fantastic. Paul Rose busked most professionally in the afternoon, creating a festival like feel. Later, the jazz band took over, and played superbly! They were joined by guest saxophonist, Katie.

The weather held out admirably and there were even glances of sunlight through the trees. It was later that night that the rain came, once it was too late to leave! The stencilled cardboard boxes did manage to block the worst of it, and noone got a soaking.

30th Anniversary Event
10th March 2007

The first of March was the opening night for St Paul's Hostel in 1977. The venue was a derelict vicarage of St Paul's Church. The night hostel was run by volunteers for the first 8 months, and catered for over 300 men, 60% of whom were local.

Since then, the hostel moved to its current site, was rebuilt, and has become a 24 hour direct access hostel. Now we turn away at least 2 people a night.

On the 10th March this year we held a celebration event to remember the past and look to the future. Three of the 'Founding Fathers' were able to join us from all parts of the UK, plus many of the old staff, and volunteers.

The Salvation Army played the standard in, then played for us. The St Paul's Church band also performed, and Duo Dolcitini, two accompanied women in stunning dresses sang early English songs.

Two ex residents of St Paul's Hostel talked about their life stories: Phil from Manchester talked about how he had started drinking at the age of 12 and was on the streets by 21. He has 3 children from 2 relationships that both broke down. He met his current partner while sleeping rough, and she was so attached to him that she joined him on the streets although not a drinker. Eventually they were encouraged by a rough sleepers worker to move away, and came to Worcester. Phil had his last drink on the train and has not touched it since. They live in a lovely flat in Worcester, and are happy, independent and back in touch with Phil's family.

Sea Life Centre Trip
December 2007

DSCF0517_croped.jpg

Nic and four clients had a day trip to the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham, on a bleak and cold December’s day. The trip was arranged as just a fun day out, for those interested.

It was noticed that a tetra fish was classed as being more dangerous than a piranha. The shark tunnel was also a favourite, along with the mirror maze. It was unfortunately a bit on the cold side to hang about near the Otters.
