Aims of the project

The Dry House is a substance free environment offering accommodation for those wanting to make positive changes in their lives.

Bromyard Rd aims to provide housing for people who have experienced difficulties with substances, and who are homeless or in inappropriate or insecure accommodation.

The project aims to resettle all clients in suitable independent accommodation.

Regular keywork sessions will be held to discuss the need of each resident.

History & other agencies

The house first opened in 1991 for men unable to look after themselves or Old Men of The Road. The house was staffed for 24 hours a day and provided a safe, homely environment for these long term residents. However, St Paul's Hostel was not able to keep the occupancy rates up and a new client group was sought.

Research and statistics state that this type of accommodation has the best chance of success!

Agencies in Worcester had long identified the need for a 'dry house.' The Bromyard Road project was initiated by St Paul's Hostel, who agreed that there was an unmet need. After a short closure, the house reopened in 1996 as a Dry House.

St Paul's Hostel employs one full time project leader at Bromyard Rd, plus 24 hour on-call cover.

In addition the clients receive support from the referring agency and the appropriate drug/alcohol services. Support would include group work, one-to-one counselling and relapse prevention. There is also support for the clients' families.

Ethos

During your stay at the project, you will be encouraged to form relationships based on trust and mutual support.

This will be partially achieved by taking on the responsibility of running the house, working with fellow clients as a team. Jobs will include shopping, cleaning and gardening.

There are general house meetings and keywork carried out on a regular basis.

The house

It is a large Victorian house offering privacy for the residents, as well as a sense of belonging to a small community.

The house comprises of a large TV lounge, large dining/kitchen area, 1 ground floor bedroom and 4 single and 1 double room upstairs.

All bedrooms are kept locked for the residents' privacy. Smoking is not permitted indoors.

Outside there is a fairly large garden, with a barbeque area.
